Should You Clean an Ancient Roman Coin?
Short answer: don't. Patina is not dirt — it is a stable corrosion layer that took centuries to form, it protects the metal beneath it, and collectors pay for it (Casey, 1986). Removing it can cut a coin's value by half or more, permanently. The only situation that genuinely requires action is active bronze disease, and even then the right first move is stabilisation, not cleaning.
Every dealer has the same conversation several times a year. Someone inherits a group of dark, dull Roman bronzes, decides to make them presentable, and arrives with a bag of shiny orange discs that were worth a few hundred pounds the week before and are now worth a fraction of that. The damage is not reversible. This page exists to be read before that happens.
What patina actually is
When a copper-alloy coin sits in soil for centuries, the surface metal reacts with its environment and converts into a layer of stable copper compounds — typically dark green malachite, sometimes blue-green azurite, red-brown cuprite, or a smooth glossy brown-black (Scott, 2002). That layer is chemically inert, physically hard, and bonded to the coin.
Three things follow. It protects the remaining metal from further attack. It preserves the detail, because the design is now partly held in the patina itself. And it authenticates, because a genuinely ancient patina is difficult to fake convincingly and is one of the first things a specialist reads (Grierson, 1975).
Strip it and you lose all three at once. You expose raw, pitted, freshly reactive metal; you take the surviving fine detail off with it; and you remove the strongest visual evidence that the coin is what it claims to be. Cleaned bronzes routinely get returned as "suspicious" not because they are fake but because the evidence has been scrubbed off.
The one real exception: bronze disease
Bronze disease is not cosmetic. It is an active, self-sustaining reaction between chloride ions trapped in the metal, moisture and oxygen, and left alone it will consume the coin (Scott, 2002; Cronyn, 1990). It is the one condition where doing nothing is worse than intervening.

The distinction between stable patina and bronze disease is the single most useful thing on this page. Stable patina is hard and dark and it stays put. Bronze disease is pale and powdery and it comes back. If you brush a green spot away and it returns within weeks, it is active.
Safe first aid
If you have a coin with soil on it and no active corrosion, the following will not harm it:
- Distilled water soaks. Submerge the coin in distilled water — never tap water, which contains chlorides — and change it every few days. Soaks can run for weeks. This dissolves soluble salts and softens soil without touching the patina.
- A wooden or bamboo point. Softer than the patina, so it can lift loosened soil out of the recesses without scoring the surface. Work under magnification, gently, and stop the moment you meet resistance.
- Thorough drying. Pat dry, then let the coin air-dry completely. Trapped moisture is what starts bronze disease.
- Isolation and dry storage. Store coins individually in inert holders, away from PVC, in a stable, dry environment. Silica gel in the cabinet is cheap insurance.
For suspected bronze disease, the recognised approaches — sodium sesquicarbonate soaking to draw out chlorides, or benzotriazole treatment to inhibit the reaction (Cronyn, 1990) — are conservator's work. They take weeks, need correct concentrations and rinsing, and go wrong easily. For any coin of value, pay a professional.
What never to use
- Vinegar, lemon juice, cola, ketchup, descaler — acids. They strip patina and etch the metal.
- Metal polish, silver dip, brass cleaner — abrasives and chemical strippers. Instantly recognisable, instantly value-destroying.
- Wire brushes, steel wool, abrasive pads — they leave parallel micro-scratches across the fields that no amount of retoning hides.
- Rotary tumblers — they round off every high point and destroy the strike.
- Ultrasonic cleaners — they can shake loose patina and crust off unevenly, taking detail with it.
- Olive oil — the persistent internet remedy. It works slowly, it is very hard to remove afterwards, it goes rancid, and it darkens and stains the surface. Distilled water does the same job without the residue.
What about "uncleaned" lots?
Bags of uncleaned Roman bronzes are sold everywhere and marketed on the fantasy of finding something extraordinary. The economics are against you: these lots are the residue left after dealers have picked out everything identifiable, and most of what remains is late 4th century AE4 that will grade poorly even after careful work. Buy them because you enjoy the conservation process — it is a real and rewarding skill — but not as a route to value.
The honest exception to "never clean"
Professional conservators do remove deposits from ancient coins, and good dealers disclose it (Cronyn, 1990). The difference between conservation and damage is not whether material was removed but what was removed and how: a conservator takes off overlying crust under magnification while leaving the patina and the original surface intact, and stops at the point where the original surface begins. Household cleaning cannot make that distinction, which is why the advice for anyone without training is simply to stop.
A coin that has survived eighteen centuries in the ground can be ruined in ten minutes at a kitchen sink. The patina is the survivor's coat — leave it on.
Frequently asked questions
Can I clean a Roman coin with vinegar or lemon juice?
No. Both are acids, and they strip patina and attack the metal underneath, leaving a pink, etched, lifeless surface that every experienced buyer recognises immediately. The same applies to cola, ketchup, descaler and proprietary metal polish. A coin treated this way typically loses most of its market value permanently.

They can be genuinely enjoyable as a hobby in their own right, but buy them for the process, not in the hope of finding something valuable.
Is it safe to soak a coin in distilled water?
Yes, this is the one broadly safe intervention. Distilled water contains no chlorides or minerals to add to the problem, and long soaks with regular water changes gently loosen soil and soluble salts without touching the patina. Change the water often, do not scrub, and dry the coin thoroughly afterwards.
