How to Store Ancient Roman Coins Safely

Short answer: keep each coin in an inert holder — polyethylene, polypropylene or polyester, never soft PVC — inside a closed box, in a stable room at moderate to low humidity, away from wood, rubber, wool and adhesives. Handle by the edge, over a soft surface, and look at the collection often enough to catch a problem while it is still small.

A coin that survived seventeen centuries in the ground did so because its environment was stable. The moment it enters a collection, that stability ends. It is now exposed to household air, to whatever material it is resting against, and to being picked up. Most of the damage seen in the trade today was not inflicted by Roman use or by burial. It was inflicted after 1970, in a drawer, by a collector who meant well.

1. The holder is the decision that matters most

Everything a coin touches for years at a time is chemically in contact with it. Conservation practice therefore divides storage materials sharply into inert and reactive, and the museum test for the difference — accelerated ageing of a material alongside metal coupons — has been standard for half a century (Oddy, 1975; Green and Thickett, 1995).

The traditional mahogany or oak coin cabinet deserves a specific note, because it is both the most beautiful storage option and one of the more hazardous. Wood emits acetic and formic acid as it ages, and coin cabinets have a long documented record of corroding the objects inside them (Horie, 2010). If you want one, choose a well-seasoned hardwood cabinet from a maker who understands the problem, line the trays with inert foam rather than felt, and do not treat it as sealed long-term storage for anything fragile.

2. Air: keep it dry, and keep it steady

For copper-alloy coins — which is most of what a Roman collection contains — humidity is not a comfort setting. It is the switch that turns corrosion on.

Buried bronzes frequently carry chloride compounds within their corrosion layers. In dry air these sit inert. Above roughly 40 per cent relative humidity they can begin an ongoing cycle of hydrolysis that produces fresh acid and consumes sound metal from within — the condition collectors call bronze disease (Scott, 2002). It appears as pale, powdery, light-green spots with a slightly waxy look, quite unlike the hard, even patina of a stable coin, and it spreads.

Two practical consequences follow. Keep bronze below about 40 per cent RH, using conditioned silica gel in a sealed box if your rooms will not hold that. And avoid fluctuation as much as absolute level: a heated interior cupboard beats a loft, a garage or anywhere against an external wall. Bathrooms and cellars are the two worst rooms in most houses.

A workable setup for a home collection

  • Inert flips or polyester envelopes, one coin per holder, never loose together
  • A rigid closed box or archival case, kept in an interior room
  • Conditioned silica gel, plus a cheap hygrometer inside the box
  • Activated charcoal cloth or anti-tarnish strips in the silver tray
  • A written or photographic record kept somewhere other than the box

3. Silver, gold and bronze want slightly different things

Silver does not suffer from chloride corrosion in the way bronze does, but it tarnishes readily when exposed to sulphur-containing pollutants, forming silver sulphide as a darkening film. Rubber bands, wool, some papers and ordinary urban air all contribute. Light, even toning on an ancient silver coin is attractive and desirable; do not attempt to remove it. Prevent further darkening by isolating the coins and using an absorbent such as activated charcoal cloth in the enclosure.

Gold is chemically almost inert and needs no protection from the air at all. Its vulnerability is mechanical: gold is soft, and an aureus rubbing against another coin in a tray will acquire hairlines that permanently cost it money. Give gold individual holders and do not stack it.

Bronze and billon are the material that needs monitoring. Their patina is a protective layer and part of the coin's identity, and the goal of storage is simply to leave it undisturbed in dry air.

4. Handling

Skin deposits salt, moisture and oil. On a stable patina this is a minor issue; on gold and silver, fingerprints etch in over time and become visible permanently.

  • Hold the coin by the edge, between thumb and forefinger, never flat against the faces.
  • Work over a table with a soft cloth or pad. Nearly every rim knock in existence was a coin dropped onto a hard surface.
  • Clean, dry hands are acceptable; nitrile gloves are better. Cotton gloves reduce grip and cause more drops than they prevent.
  • Do not speak directly over a coin you are examining closely, and do not eat near the collection.
  • Return each coin to its own holder immediately. Coins left out "for a moment" are the ones that get scratched.

5. What not to do, whatever the internet says

The single most valuable rule in ancient numismatics is that storage is not conservation, and neither of them is cleaning. Do not polish, dip, scrub, brush or apply chemicals to an ancient coin. Two further habits worth abandoning: never store coins in contact with each other in a bag or tin, where they abrade with every movement; and never apply lacquer, wax or oil in the belief that it seals the surface. Coatings yellow, trap moisture beneath themselves, and are treated by the market as damage.

If you see the light-green powder of active bronze disease, isolate that coin from the rest of the collection immediately, keep it dry, and consult a professional conservator. Home remedies circulated online are the reason many affected coins end up unrecoverable.

6. Records, insurance and the paperwork

Storage is not only physical. A collection with no documentation loses value the moment it changes hands, because the buyer is purchasing uncertainty.

Photograph both faces of every coin at a consistent scale, and record weight in grams, diameter in millimetres, the catalogue reference, what you paid, and where and when you bought it. Keep invoices, certificates and any export or provenance documentation with that record — this is the material that establishes lawful ownership, a subject we cover in our guide to the law. For insurance, ordinary household contents cover rarely extends to a collection of any significance, and where it does the single-item limit is usually far below the value of a decent denarius. A specialist policy will normally want a current valuation, which is worth refreshing every few years in any case — values move, and an out-of-date figure protects nobody.

Good storage is unglamorous and almost entirely negative: the right inert material, dry and steady air, and the discipline to leave the coin alone. Do those three things and the coin will outlast you as comfortably as it outlasted Rome.

Why is PVC bad for coins?

The damage is permanent and cannot be reversed by removing the coin later, so old flips should be replaced now rather than eventually.

What humidity should ancient coins be kept at?

Below about 40 per cent relative humidity for bronze and copper, which is the range in which active chloride corrosion — bronze disease — is effectively suppressed. Stability matters as much as the number: a cupboard in a heated living room is better than a loft that swings between damp and dry. Basements, bathrooms and unheated garages are the worst places in most houses.

Should I store Roman coins in a bank vault?

For high-value pieces it is a reasonable security decision, but not automatically a good conservation one. Vault rooms are not always humidity-controlled and you cannot inspect the coins regularly, which means active corrosion can go unnoticed for years.
